about

I was introduced to the Blastoff in the summer of 1997; I'd been living two doors down from guitarist Jeff Irwin in our dorm at Penn State, and when my band Damaramu was looking to play some shows out of town, Jeff asked us to join his band (then called the Beach Blanket Blastoff) at an all-day show near Pittsburgh. Our bands became fast friends, and the Blastoff's other guitarist Doug Wright and I would end up playing in Score One for the Fat Kid some years later in Boston.

That fall, the newly rechristened Blastoff 3.0 released "Too Loud for Candlelight" on cassette, and played a show in State College that December, opening for Braid right before they went onto record "Frame and Canvas". The B3 tape remained a favorite of mine, with its GBV hooks and humor, its Promise Ring tunefulness, and its lyrics about maps, football, invisible girlfriends and outer space.

In 2021, Doug reached out to me about reissuing "Candlelight" and sent me the artwork and songs from the long out-of-print album. It's been a blast reconnecting with these tunes, and I look forward to sharing them with a new audience, as well as anyone from the band's heyday looking to revisit the songs. As always, I hope you enjoy it.
